Pre Marathon Suggestions

Start of the race

There is a wealth of races across the UK every weekend, and it's often hard to know what's best in the build up to a marathon, especially if it's your first. Here at the RB Hull Marathon, we have teamed up with four local events we believe fit the bill.

Fitmums & Friends 365 Challenge

Date: All Year

Fitmums love a challenge and couldn't resist the opportunity to get involved with what’s going on in their local community. Combining these two passions with the City of Culture 2017, and supported by Springfield Solutions they present the Fitmums and Friends 365 Challenge!

Supporting people living and working in Hull and East Yorkshire to be in the very best of health and achieve their full fitness potential, the challenge is open to all; Costing £5, each participant will receive a medal upon completion, with all entry fees going directly back to Fitmums and Friends to help support the work they do in local communities to help people become more active.

So, what is the challenge?

The challenge for adults is to run, walk, cycle or buggy push 365 miles during 2017. Alternatively if swimming, exercise/dance classes, team sports, dog walking are more your thing - then record these and aim to be as active as possible in line with recommendations (30 minutes on at least 5 days in a week). Physical activity guidelines for adults.

And children can get involved to by completing 365 periods of activity over the year; This could be anything, like walking, scooting or cycling to school, PE lessons, sports clubs or even playing tig with friends, family walks, playing in the garden.

For each one mile, or 1 hour period of physical activity, colour in a mosaic tile on the activity chart (see link) and each participant will receive a medal once they have completed their 365 challenge. Potentially rewarding you before you've run the marathon! Got to Fitmums & Friends 365 Challenge for more details.

Humber Bridge Half Marathon

Date: Sunday 25th June

If you want a chance to challenge yourself early on in your training for September and to see how it feels to cross the Humber Bridge in a big race, this is the ideal preparation. For 18 years one of the biggest races in the region has optimised the longest single span suspension bridge in the world that can be crossed on foot. A challenging course, runners get to embrace the bridge in both directions with a loop around Barton upon Humber and the infamous "Cardiac Hill". Organised by the Rotary Club of Hull, enjoy this spectacular event across the Humber.

Gilberdyke 10

Date: Sunday 27 August

Well placed at 4 weeks before the marathon, this gives you a chance to run at race pace or enjoy it as training (maybe add some more miles on?) or an ideal distance for those preparing for the 2 person relay. Organised by Humber Triathletes and Kris Lecher, this is a flat course based in the village of Gilberdyke, to the west of Kingston upon Hull.

Major Stone Half Marathon

Date: Sunday 3 September

Organised by East Hull Harriers, 3 weeks before the RB Hull Marathon, this is a great opportunity for a final push before the big day. Or you could just go round at a steady pace, but with lots of others! Based in the village of Lockington, just north of Beverley, this rural course is undulating on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. Runners can enjoy a great choice of homemade cakes in the village hall afterwards.
